Athens, October 2004

Our trip to Athens was organized from Oct. 2, 2004 . to Oct. 9, 2004 . within the framework of the TEMPUS project CD_JEP-17028-2002. During the stay in Athens, our group of four professors acquainted itself with the work and teaching organization at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

In accordance with the purpose of the project, we paid our ultimate attention to the visiting of the Faculty laboratories. Professor Yannis Papananos, project coordinator and our host, is the head of the Microelectronic Circuit Design Group, hence he demonstrated his Microelectronic Circuit Design Laboratory. Laboratory is equipped with a number of workstations (as well as PC computers), having installed the professional CAD softwares, such as Cadence DFII and Agilent ADS. Beside computer equipment, the laboratory is equipped with the measuring instrumentation for the measurements up to several tens of GHz, as the group is involved in the design of RF circuits.

Next to this scientific research laboratory there is the electronics laboratory for undergraduate students. This laboratory is also equipped with high quality instruments, mostly made by Agilent. Also, we discussed with Prof. Yannis Papananos and his assistant Nicolaos Nastos the following courses: Introduction to Digital VLSI (7th semester), Analog VLSI Design (8th semester) and RFCI Design (post-graduate course). Specially, we discussed about book "Radio-Frequency Microelectronics Circuits for Telecommunication Applications".

Beside the laboratories of Professor Papananos, we visited the Photonics Communications Research Laboratory, that was demonstrated to us by its Head, Professor Hercules Avramopoulos, as well as the Laboratory for thin film and thick film technology. Also, we spent much of the time at the University library, which is extremely well equipped with the international journals and the technical books by worldwide famous authors.

During the stay in Athens, Professor Milan Prokin also visited the Athens Information Technology Center of Excellence for Research and Graduate Education and met Dr. Lazaros Polymenakos, Associate Professor, Head, Autonomic & Grid Computing and Dr. Ioannis Zacharopoulos, Assistant Professor, High Speed Networks & Optical Communications.
